As Melissa and Ray prepared for their wedding in adjacent suites at the Portland Regency Hotel, they pulled back corners of curtains to see if the clouds might disperse. No such luck. For one guest in particular, rain might prove disastrous. Drops pelted cobblestone streets, leaving a soft sheen of silt and mud. The car conveying that critical visitor came to a stop out front, and there she was, held aloft over the cobblestones’ dirt and grime: the couple’s five-month-old golden retriever, Summer.
