Me & My Kayak

…We’re making memories for a lifetime—
at least mine (plastic is forever).

“Six feet social distance is no problem on the water,” says Janet Robinson, president of Southern Maine Sea Kayaking Network. Kayakers are “socializing and chatting but can never get much closer than six feet because they’ve got a paddle sticking out the side of the boat,” says Tom Bergh, of Maine Island Kayaking.

Favorite Kayaking Destinations:

Cape Elizabeth: “You can go in and out of the white water spots where it’s breaking against the rocks,” Bergh says. “What we call rock gardening.”

Cushing Island: “A nice view of the headlight, but the waters can get choppy,” Robinson says.

Eagle Island: The summer home of arctic explorer Admiral Peary.

East End Beach: Easy starting point.

Jewell Island: “It’s fresh from winter. The greenery is coming in strong,” Bergh says. “It’s really pretty—crisp, sharp colors.”

Outer Green Island: Bergh says, “There are a thousand terns that come back to that little island and nest.”

Scarborough Marsh: “A good site for beginners,” Kidd says. “It’s shallow, protected, and if you fall over you can stand up if the tides are right.”

Safety Tips:

  • Don’t go alone.
  • Be aware of the weather and water conditions. Dress appropriately.
  • Wear a personal floatation device. The brighter, the better!
  • Avoid high traffic areas and bigger boats. Stick to the shallows.
  • Make sure you have the right equipment. A short recreational boat might be appropriate for calm inland waters, but a longboat with a spray skirt is better for open-ocean.
  • Practice self-rescue before hitting the water.
  • Be cautious and do your research.
