West Indies shipping merchant Jonathan Hartwell Fletcher was born in Westford, Massachusetts in 1821. After dabbling in blacksmithery, he moved to Portland and took a position as a clerk in his sister’s husband’s family business, Smith & Hersey. Wresting control of the firm, he renamed it Fletcher & Co. and began operations as an import/export firm.
