Without You, There is No Show

Taking five with Grace Kelly, starring at Jonathan’s in Ogunquit.

By Colin W. Sargent

Growing up in Wellesley, and then going to Berklee College of Music, you must have come up to Maine on some summer weekends.
I have a deep history with loving Maine. I went to music camp there—Camp Encore/Coda. I remember the most amazing lobster meals. Gorgeous walks outside, playing music everywhere. We played in a venue called the Chocolate Church [in Bath], and in Portland.

How did Jonathan’s approach you?
It was to my agent. I’ve heard such great things about the club. James Montgomery and Tom Rush have told me.

Where will you go in Maine once you’re up here?
Where should I go?

Old Orchard Beach Pier. The greatest jazz musicians in the world played here —Count Basie, Duke Ellington. My father talked with Buddy Rich once after a show at the dance hall at the end of the pier. The music’s still out there.
