Bach Virtuosi Festival founder and director Lewis Kaplan lets us in on what’s in store this summer, Bach’s drinking habits, and what keeps him coming back to Maine.

Why did you choose Portland as the home for the Bach Virtuosi Festival?

I co-founded the Bowdoin International Music Festival in 1964 and guided it for 50 years. After stepping down as Director in 2014, I grew restless. I wanted to devote myself to Bach. Portland is a vibrant and growing community where the audiences are outstanding and appreciative. I felt the festival and Portland were a good match.
