The classic Maine lobster bake is back. If it ever left. Would you like
a martini with that?

 

An old-fashioned Maine clambake
is done on a beach. We dig a pit, line it with stones and wood, set a fire. Once the stones are hot and the fire has burned out, we add seaweed and the main ingredients, cover the pit, and wait. The day the astronauts landed on the moon, my parents—Earle and Jay— and I had a small beach clambake. Dad was so excited about the historic event that he imbibed too much scotch and lost track of time, and all the clams melted.
