When the taxman cometh, even the most accomplished among us can get caught in the snare.

You never know who’s living next door to you in Maine. It could be a Rockefeller. Or you could be looking at the former lodge of Clark Rockefeller’s criminal defense attorney.

The U.S. government is the seller of 337 Horseshoe Pond Road in Stoneham, near Fryeburg. It was built in 1990 but remains in mysteriously pristine condition, suspended in time. The rustic getaway’s listed owner once made a big splash here, but this palace in the wild has been “seized by the U.S. Department of Justice” for tax issues, according to real-estate executive Jennifer Regan of Coldwell Banker Lifestyles of Conway, New Hampshire. And it’s up for sale.
