Hidden on the east side of Moosehead Lake, “Maine’s Grand Canyon” lies in a narrow cleft of the world “made out of Chaos and Old Night,” like Henry David Thoreau says. Famous to kayakers and intrepid hikers, the curiosity known as Gulf Hagas or “The Grand Canyon of the East” has an elegant front door—the town of Greenville. Or you can take a scrappier approach from the east, via Brownville Junction.
