Navy vet Scott Smith choreographs the dance of summer

Seasoned surfing instructor Scott Smith got into teaching at Aquaholics surf camp in Kennebunk ten years ago because of a health scare. “The former owner took me under her wing, knowing this sport would give me the boost I needed.” Three days a week all summer, Smith coaches kids 8 and up in groups with a 1 to 3 coach-to-student ratio for three hour-and-a-half lessons per session ($175, wetsuit and surfboard provided).
A veteran of eight years in the Navy with five years at sea—three stationed in Japan—Smith, 52, a former military law enforcement instructor, left the service with what he calls “a little bit of an edge” after losing thirty percent
