Remember Blueberries for Sal? We’ve found her!

In 1948, impish Sal McCloskey charmed wild blueberry land and the rest of the world as the main character of her dad’s Caldecott Medal-winning children’s book Blueberries for Sal. In the years since, we’ve upshifted to a fast and frightening world. It isn’t just a black bear who chases us now. In times like these, we deserve a treat—maybe the chance to meet someone sweet and eternal, if a little piquant? In fact, we need to hear from Sal right now.
Surprise: Sarah (“Sal”) McCloskey is a real-estate attorney who for 44 years has practiced law on the coast of Maine. Do readers recognize and hail her? Do they ask her about antioxidants? The Sal we meet is succinct and tart, her wry sense of humor a little dark, like a Maine blueberry. And what she has to say is a mouthful: “I’m not sure I want to talk on the phone. I don’t want to do the same old, same old.”
