When Carol Schiller founded the University Neighborhood Organization in 2005, Longfellow Park lay awash in darkness.
A divide existed between students and faculty who lived in the neighborhood and residents who considered them vaguely threatening transients. “There was a lot of negativity towards the USM students, so we formed this organization to welcome them. We are open to everybody and want them to be part of the neighborhood. We asked the students ‘What do you want?’
