This house “started out as a big tent platform. We just wanted to get away for the weekend, and then we thought, why don’t we put something on it?” says owner Carrie Burnsteel about her Quonset hut. “It took us three weekends to build it. The first arch was 40 feet and 240 pounds. My husband, teenage son, his friend, and I put it up together.” Presto! A Birch Island sanctuary. “Getting away from it all while still being so close to Portland is amazing.”
