He thought his kindness could save me from myself, and it mostly did for ten years. Even when the Board of Nursing revoked my license for stealing medications, he kept on being kind as if nothing had happened. But when he couldn’t understand why I didn’t want his rifle in the house, I was done. It’s only my reenactment gun, he reasoned. Surely it couldn’t be problematic.
