Maya Williams, Portland Poet Laureate, wants to make your brain dance.

How’d you find out you were Portland’s 2022 Poet Laureate?  

Through the former Poet Laureate Linda Aldrich. I wanted the position quite badly.

It’s a form of civic engagement. I work with the Portland Public Library to implement community-related programs around poetry. Each Poet Laureate has done that differently. I’ve been doing it by facilitating workshops and creating a database for trans artists and doing a community hub and open mic. My term started July 2021, and I’ll be serving until 2024.
