The Wabanaki Confederacy of Tribal Nations has lived here in our ancestral homeland now called Maine for at least 10,000 years. At one time there was upward of twenty distinct tribes; now there are the Mik’maq, Maliseet, Passamamquoddy, Penobscot, and Abenaki. Our name Wabanaki derives from our word Chquabanakiyik, “the people of the dawn.”
