Now we’ve shifted our rudder. Cannabis became legal by referendum for recreational use, retail sale, and taxation in 2016, and the first licenses for recreational, or adult-use, cannabis businesses were issued in September 2020, with purchasing becoming legal for those 21 and over as of last October. This welcome sea change has let Maine’s original eight non-profit medical dispensaries (one per Maine DHHS Health District) bloom into 623 medical providers, 3,084 registered caregivers, and 4,791 registered caregiver employees and assistants as of March 2021, with cumulative adult-use retail sales since last October totaling $13,052,671 as we rush into summer.
