A tragic holiday menu surfaces from a sunken Liberty ship.
By Colin W. Sargent
The Liberty Ship John A. Poor was named for the plucky Maine railroad executive who linked train service between Portland and Montreal.
To demonstrate to Montreal that we were a closer seaport for them than Boston, and that the mountains and rivers between us could be covered, he traveled by sleigh through a blizzard from here to there, astonishing the Montreal Board of Trade. Imagine the imposing figure of Poor stalking into their conference room, brushing off snow.
